Dan James has discussed the potential ramifications of the ongoing Championship campaign, highlighting the disappointment it would bring if Leeds United were to miss out on automatic promotion.

As Leeds contends with Leicester City and Ipswich Town for automatic promotion to the Premier League, there’s a looming prospect of one of these teams being relegated to the playoffs by the end of the season.

While Leeds currently leads the Championship table, Leicester has a game in hand after their FA Cup fixture against Chelsea before the international break, while Ipswich Town maintains their momentum.

Speaking on the My Mate’s A Footballer podcast, James expressed his sentiments: “It would be gutting to miss out on the top two. Hopefully, we don’t have to go through that, but we would have to get on with it and get ready for play-offs. The teams that finish fifth and sixth go into those games buzzing, but we would feel a bit gutted.”

Avoiding the Championship playoffs is a priority for Leeds United supporters, particularly given the financial implications and the return of loaned players if promotion isn’t secured.

However, Leeds’ performance this season suggests that Leicester and Ipswich should be wary of the Whites’ capabilities to secure second place.

Under Daniel Farke’s management, Leeds has been formidable, remaining unbeaten at home in the league and reaching the FA Cup fifth round.

While James has been a key player, his recent Euro 2024 heartbreak with Wales may impact his immediate return to club duties after missing a crucial penalty against Poland during the international break.

With just eight matches left in the campaign, Farke will rely on the depth of his squad to maintain their promotion push.
