SAD NEWS: Key Vikings veteran likely said to miss half of the season.

The Minnesota Vikings are in an unusual situation since their roster has youthful players who can be developed, as well as a consistent group of veterans who will keep them competitive moving into the 2024 NFL season. Following Kirk Cousins’ departure in free agency, Minnesota’s offense should look very different, with either Sam Darnold or J.J. McCarthy at quarterback.

Meanwhile, the team has yet to decide how much to pay Justin Jefferson, who is expected to break the current wide receiver deal record. Assuming a settlement is reached, the Vikings should be able to compete next season, albeit without standout tight end T.J. Hockenson.

Hockenson tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 16 loss to the Detroit Lions, and he has spent the offseason recovering from the horrific injuries. Although Hockenson is expected to play this year, his recuperation period may extend beyond the midpoint of the regular season, according to Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune (via The Purple Persuasion).

So T.J. will most likely not be ready for the season opener. He was asked on NFL Network, “Will you be ready for the London game?” And he skirted the question. This might mean that Darnold, J.J., or whoever the quarterback is, will be without T.J. for the first half of the season, if you give it 9 months,” Krammer said.

Although it would be difficult to be without Hockenson for half of the year, his long-term health comes first. He should take as long as necessary to recover before being cleared to play in a game again.
