The NFL’s frenetic free agency period has concluded, and the Kansas City Chiefs have made notable moves, particularly at wide receiver and on defense, welcoming back familiar faces. However, their offensive line remains a concern, especially at left tackle. Despite this, the Chiefs have a few avenues to explore before the NFL Draft in April.

Donovan Smith, who served as KC’s left tackle last season, remains available in the free-agent market. Additionally, Wanya Morris, the Chiefs’ third-round draft pick in 2023, is poised to enter his second year after filling in for Smith in four games last season. With these options in mind, could the Chiefs be eyeing another veteran to fortify their offensive line? Jordan Foote of Arrowhead Report and I delve deeper into the potential candidates to safeguard Patrick Mahomes’s blindside.

In the ideal scenario for the Kansas City Chiefs, Wanya Morris emerges as a reliable long-term solution at left tackle. With Morris’s rookie contract keeping his salary cap hit below $2 million annually, the Chiefs currently allocate substantial cap space to left guard Joe Thuney and right tackle Jawaan Taylor. However, relying solely on Morris might not be prudent, given his mixed performance in relief of Donovan Smith last season.

Jordan Foote emphasizes the need for competition at left tackle, suggesting options like drafting a tackle in the early rounds or considering a veteran like Mekhi Becton. While Morris deserves a fair shot, the Chiefs can’t afford to bet blindly on his success. Bringing back Donovan Smith could be a viable short-term solution, given his solid contributions during his tenure.

Despite salary cap constraints, adding a veteran left tackle might be necessary, as drafting a rookie outside the first two rounds could present risks. Donovan Smith remains a practical choice, but other options like Mekhi Becton offer intriguing upside. Ultimately, the Chiefs must balance cost, performance, and long-term stability to fortify protection for Patrick Mahomes.
