The Scotsman claimed that McMinn, who was born in Castle Douglas and raised in the neighboring town of Dumfries, was nicknamed “Teddy” at school because he would run with a teddy bear tucked under his arm.[2] According to McMinn’s book, it was because he was inseparable from his teddy bear when he was a toddler.[1]

In 1981, McMinn began playing for Scottish junior team Glenafton Athletic.[1] McMinn and teammate Stewart Cochrane came to Glenafton from Dumfries High School FPs.

In 1982, McMinn moved back to the southwest of Scotland and joined Queen of the South, a club in Dumfries. He joined Cochrane’s team for the third time at Queens. “£325 so that Glenafton could buy 1,000 Queens lottery tickets and a new carpet for their club house,” was the stated reason for the transfer price. In the middle of Scottish football’s three divisions, McMinn made his debut in 1982–83 for a Queens team that had just been demoted after one season. During that season, Willie Harkness and the other directors had made the decision to govern the club without a manager and choose the squad themselves. On November 6, McMinn made his debut in a 1-1 tie with Meadowbank Thistle. McMinn stayed on at Queens until the end of October 1984.
