Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Geraldo Perdomo has surgery for torn meniscus.

Following his placement on the injured list on Sunday, Geraldo Perdomo, the shortstop for the Arizona Diamondbacks, underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, as informed by manager Torey Lovullo on Monday.

The surgery was successful, and Perdomo is aiming to return to action in May. He had started the first seven games of the season for the Diamondbacks, boasting a .250 batting average with a double, two RBI, a .625 OPS, and a 0.1 WAR before sustaining the injury on April 3rd. Consequently, Arizona placed the 24-year-old infielder on the 10-day injured list.

Perdomo, previously recognized as a top 100 prospect in baseball, debuted in MLB in 2021 and became the Diamondbacks’ primary shortstop in 2022. Despite struggling at times with a batting average below .200, he managed to maintain a WAR of 0.6 in 148 games that season.

His breakthrough came in 2023 when he improved significantly, hitting .246 with a .712 OPS and a 2.3 WAR in 144 games. Perdomo’s performance earned him a spot on his first All-Star team due to his impressive batting average and OPS through June 28th.

Though his form dipped in the latter half of the season, Perdomo showcased his prowess in the playoffs, batting .275 with a .754 OPS across 17 postseason appearances, contributing to the Diamondbacks’ National League pennant victory.

In Perdomo’s absence, Kevin Newman has been called up from Triple-A Reno to fill in at shortstop. Newman had been performing well in the minor leagues, batting .364 with a 1.044 OPS in six appearances before his promotion. Since joining the big league roster, he has recorded one hit and an RBI in six at-bats.

Additionally, 24-year-old rookie Blaze Alexander will also see playing time at shortstop during Perdomo’s absence. Alexander has impressed with a .292 batting average and a .763 OPS through eight appearances, also seeing action at second base and designated hitter.
