The Boston Red Sox’s pitching staff is facing significant challenges, particularly with the recent news of reliever Chris Murphy undergoing Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his season. Murphy’s elbow issues emerged during spring training, preventing him from playing any games for both Boston and Worcester at the season’s start.

After weeks of uncertainty, Murphy ultimately underwent the season-ending procedure performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. In the 2023 season, Murphy struggled with a 6.32 ERA in Triple-A but showed promise as a reliever in the big leagues with a 4.91 ERA.

His absence leaves the Red Sox with a shortage of left-handed pitching options, relying on Joely Rodríguez, Lucas Luetge, and Brennan Bernardino until Murphy’s return next season.
