Sheffield United is on the verge of an undesirable position in Premier League history.

Sheffield United has managed to avoid one unwanted Premier League record, but Chris Wilder’s team is heading towards another as relegation back to the Championship looms.

Following the humiliating 6-0 home defeat by Arsenal on Monday, the bottom club finds themselves level on 13 points with Burnley, who also appear likely candidates for relegation. Both teams have surpassed the 11 points that Derby County managed in 2007-08, becoming the worst-performing teams in Premier League history.

However, Sheffield United’s leaky defense puts them on track to surpass Swindon Town’s record of conceding 100 goals in the 1993-94 season. The Yorkshire club has already conceded 72 goals at an average of 2.67 per match, marking the worst defensive record after 27 Premier League games.

This tally of goals conceded after 27 games ranks as the second-highest in any of England’s top four divisions, exceeded only by the 73 goals conceded by Doncaster Rovers in the fourth tier during the 1997-98 season. If this defensive trend continues, which seems likely, Wilder’s team will become the first Premier League side to concede more than 100 goals.

Swindon’s total came from a 42-game season, while Ipswich Town conceded 93 goals also in a 42-match campaign. The highest number of goals shipped in a 38-game season is Derby’s 89.

Sheffield United fans left the stadium in large numbers as Arsenal took a 3-0 lead within 15 minutes, and they may anticipate more heavy defeats with matches against Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United still to come. Sheffield United’s next fixture is away to Bournemouth on Saturday.
