Earlier this month, Sherrone Moore and Michigan football made headlines when they signed Tony Alford from Ohio State to become their new offensive coordinator and running backs coach.

The hiring of Tony Alford from Ohio State to take over as running backs coach and offensive run game coordinator earlier this month was a major decision made by Sherrone Moore and the Michigan football team.

Alford left Columbus after the Buckeyes’ spring workouts had started. He had played for the Buckeyes for the previous nine years, under both Urban Meyer and Ryan Day. When he got to Ann Arbor, he had a room full of youthful talent, including Benjamin Hall, Donovan Edwards, and Kalel Mullings.

Moore talked about what made Alford such a desirable candidate on Thursday.

“His resume is self-explanatory,” Sherrone Moore stated. “Who he is as a mentor, recruiter, and coach. But above all, as a human being. have known him for a very long time.

He was, of course, on the opposing side. Don’t hold it against him too much. However, you simply get to know him as a person outside of that, and I mean, he’s an amazing person. Amazing coach and mentor, and we are thrilled to have him on staff.

Alford has almost 25 years of experience coaching running backs at some of the top collegiate football teams, such as Ohio State and Notre Dame, two of the biggest schools in the Midwest. Charlie Weiss hired him in 2009 at Notre Dame, and Brian Kelly kept him on staff the following year. Alford worked as the wide receivers coach in South Bend from 2010 to 2011, the running backs coach, slot receivers coach, and receiving coordinator from 2012 to 2013, and the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator from 2014 to 2016.

Alford was hired by Ohio State from Notre Dame in 2015. He was the running backs coach and assistant head coach for offense in Columbus, and he was most recently promoted to run game coordinator.

Alford is known for being a top recruiter, so Moore and his team should benefit from this experience.

“It’s just a different perspective, given his experience, actions, and places,” Moore remarked. “You don’t always do things the way you did them, and it’s always good to get a different perspective.” It’s always helpful to have a different perspective and an alternative point of view on how someone has done something, even though you may need to make a few small adjustments here and there. A method may not always be effective just because it has been tried once before. It doesn’t matter if you’ve always done things this way; there are alternative ways to accomplish things. Therefore, just looking at it from a different angle is good for us

Alford takes over for Mike Hart, the running backs coach who departed the team after three years. The all-time rushing record for the Wolverines is still held by Hart, a program legend.

Moore remarked, “Mike did so much for this university.” As a player and a member of the coaching staff, he played a crucial role in what we accomplished here. I really won’t say anything else about it.
