SHOCKING NEWS: The Sixers reporter suggests that it would be surprising if the starter, who is worth $180 million, decides to remain with the team.

Given the cap flexibility the Philadelphia 76ers have this offseason, they must make decisions on which players to retain and which to release. One of their prominent free agents is Tobias Harris, set to enter free agency in 2024.

When asked about the likelihood of Harris staying with the Sixers, Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer expressed skepticism, stating, “I’ll never say never, but it would be shocking to see Harris return.” Pompey believes Harris, being one of the top free agents, will have multiple suitors offering more lucrative deals than what the Sixers can provide, suggesting that Harris’ time in Philly is likely coming to an end.

Despite this pessimism, Sixers’ president of basketball operations Daryl Morey indicated the team’s interest in retaining Harris, acknowledging his potential contribution to a contender. Morey emphasized the team’s approach to free agency, aiming to maximize the value within the constraints of the salary cap.

While Harris might not command the same salary he received from the Sixers previously, a reduced rate could make his production more acceptable to the team.

Pompey previously reported that there’s a strong possibility Harris might leave, with speculation that he could return to his former team, the Detroit Pistons. However, several other teams are also interested in the veteran forward, who played for the Pistons from 2016 to 2018, before joining the Sixers.

During his time with the Pistons, Harris didn’t experience the same playoff success he has with the Sixers, but he also didn’t face as much criticism, likely due to differing team expectations.
