The 2024 football campaign for Oklahoma promises a series of notable milestones. Firstly, it marks the Sooners’ debut in the formidable SEC. Additionally, it signifies sophomore QB Jackson Arnold’s inaugural year as a starter, alongside the introduction of new defensive coordinator Zac Alley and co-offensive coordinators Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley.

Despite the departure of top receiver Drake Stoops, Oklahoma boasts a deep and talented wide-receiver corps, poised to rank among the best in college football. Nic Anderson, following a stellar sophomore season with 38 receptions, 798 yards, and 10 touchdowns, leads the returning talent, joined by Jalil Farooq and Jayden Gibson, who collectively recorded 59 catches and 935 receiving yards last year.

Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony emerged as Oklahoma’s top receiver in the initial six games of the previous season before succumbing to a torn ACL in the clash against Texas, sidelining him for the remainder of 2023. Known for his speed and knack for stretching defenses, Anthony adds a significant deep-threat dimension to the Sooners’ offensive arsenal. Brenen Thompson, a Texas transfer, and sophomore Jaquaize Pettaway form a dynamic duo, showcasing remarkable speed despite limited playtime last season, catching the attention of opposing defenses whenever they hit the field.

However, the standout addition to the receiving corps is Deion Burks, formerly of Purdue, where he excelled as the leading receiver in his sophomore year and earned All-Big Ten second-team honors with 47 receptions, 629 yards, and seven touchdowns. Expected to fill the void left by Stoops, Burks is likely to assume the role of Oklahoma’s primary slot receiver. CBS Sports recently hailed the quarterback-wide receiver pairing of Arnold and Burks as one of the top ten in college football for the upcoming season.

Additionally, the anticipation surrounds the influx of talent from the freshman class, featuring Zion Kearney, Ivan Carreon, Zion Ragins, and K.J. Daniels. While their impact may be more future-oriented given the existing depth and experience in the team, the challenge for Brent Venables and the coaching staff lies in distributing playing time and targets among the abundance of offensive weapons at their disposal – a dilemma that is undoubtedly a welcome one.
