Springboks Star Ox Nche Eyes Move to France as Stormers Pursue Sanele Nohamba
As the rugby season progresses, the Sharks may face the departure of two prominent Springboks. Notably, prop Ox Nche is contemplating a switch to France, while the Stormers are reportedly keen on acquiring Lions standout Sanele Nohamba. With Nche’s contract expiring at the end of the season, he is evaluating his future options in light of interest from overseas clubs.
Nche, who joined the Sharks from the Cheetahs in 2020, has become an essential player for both his club and national team. His performance as a World Cup-winning prop has caught the attention of several French teams, leaving the Sharks uncertain about retaining him. Alongside Nche, another Springbok, Lukhanyo Am, has also been mentioned in discussions about potential exits from the Sharks, creating a buzz in rugby circles.
This season has seen the Sharks bolster their midfield with the return of Andre Esterhuizen from Harlequins, while promising young talents like Jurenzo Julius and Litelihle Bester have shone during the Currie Cup. The addition of former Springboks center Francois Venter, along with rising star Ethan Hooker, further strengthens their roster.
Nche holds a critical position as the Sharks’ primary loosehead prop, supported by the versatile Trevor Nyakane and fellow Bok Ntuthuko Mchunu. However, the Sharks might face challenges in retaining their key players. Upcoming financial boosts from increased broadcasting and sponsorship revenue could play a pivotal role, with projections suggesting each South African URC team could receive around R50 million, aiding their efforts to keep talent like Nche.
Meanwhile, the Stormers are actively seeking to fill the potential gap left by scrum-half Paul de Wet, who appears close to finalizing a move to the Bulls. With ongoing speculation about De Wet’s future and interest from French clubs, Stormers coach John Dobson is already on the lookout for suitable replacements as they prepare for the upcoming season.
