Following the Atlanta Hawks’ NBA Draft lottery victory, concerns have been expressed regarding Trae Young’s future with the group.
The Hawks might add a potential star to their roster with the No. 1 pick. But it’s possible that Trae Young, their standout point guard right now, will lose out to this new acquisition.
NBA Analysis Network has learned from sources that the Hawks will probably bring up Young in trade talks throughout the offseason. Young’s contract has three years left on it, with a player option for the last one.
The Hawks had a low chance of landing the No. 1 pick but now have the opportunity to reset the franchise by trading Young and building around the player they select at the top of the draft.
Young was named to his third All-Star Game this season and finished the year with impressive averages of 25.7 points, 10.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
Despite his impressive performance, Young was limited to 54 games due to a finger injury, and the Hawks suffered in his absence, finishing with a 36-46 record.
Young has been linked to trade rumors with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, but it would be difficult for either team to acquire him due to his salary. Young is set to make $43 million in the 2024-25 season.
According to sources who spoke with NBA Analysis Network, some members of the Spurs organization are hesitant to trade for Young as well. Given San Antonio’s efforts to build around Victor Wembanyama, some in the league wonder how interested other elite players would be to play with Young. San Antonio plans to be thorough before making a significant deal.
The Hawks now have alternatives and flexibility for the future thanks to their victory in the draft lottery. They may trade Young, start again with a new core, or keep him and build around him.
In either case, the Hawks and their supporters will value this offseason.
