Sunderland U21s players rating their performance in photos following the loss to Newcastle, with one player rated 8 and several others receiving 5s.
Sunderland’s under-21s suffered a 3-2 defeat against Newcastle at the Academy of Light. Despite several first-team players starting for the young Black Cats, they conceded an early goal in the fifth minute to Kyle Crossley. Graeme Murty’s side managed to equalize through a remarkable strike from Corry Evans, but Cathal Heffernan put Newcastle ahead 2-1 just before halftime. Crossley extended Newcastle’s lead with another goal after the break, although Sunderland’s substitute Joe Ryder scored a consolation goal in stoppage time. Here’s the individual performance breakdown for each Sunderland player:
1. Nathan Bishop – 5
Didn’t face many shots aside from the three goals which were scored from close range.
2. Timothee Pembele – 5
Found himself out of position a few times at right-back, with Newcastle’s third goal coming down his flank. Made a couple of promising forward runs and has the ability to pose a threat. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
Struggled with possession leading to Newcastle’s first goal and displayed some hesitancy while in possession. However, demonstrated strength in winning most aerial duels. Rated 5.
Thomas Lavery, who started at center-back, played a vocal role in Sunderland’s defensive line. Despite this, he made a few errant passes while attempting to build from the back. Also rated 5.
