Sunderland’s under-21s suffered a 3-2 defeat against Newcastle at the Academy of Light. Despite several first-team players starting for the young Black Cats, they conceded an early goal in the fifth minute to Kyle Crossley. Graeme Murty’s side managed to equalize through a remarkable strike from Corry Evans, but Cathal Heffernan put Newcastle ahead 2-1 just before halftime. Crossley extended Newcastle’s lead with another goal after the break, although Sunderland’s substitute Joe Ryder scored a consolation goal in stoppage time.
