Ted Toleman, the creator and proprietor of the Toleman Formula 1 team, has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family. The Toleman F1 team participated in 70 grands prix from 1981 to 1985 before being acquired by Benetton and now operates as the Alpine team.

Toleman’s legacy includes launching the F1 career of Ayrton Senna, who joined the team in 1984 and had a successful debut season with three podium finishes before moving to Lotus the next year.

The team’s most prosperous season was in 1984 when it finished seventh in the Constructors’ standings. Notable drivers who raced for Toleman during its time in F1 include Stefan Johansson and Derek Warwick.
