This offseason, Clay McGuire, the new offensive line coach at Texas Tech, is one of the most significant figures in the football program. Arriving from his role at Washington State, he must construct a line that will feature four new players in the starting five and no returning starters from the previous campaign.
That’s why it was intriguing to hear McGuire discuss his group’s progress following a recent Texas Tech session.
He declared, “I think we’re coming along.” As you mentioned, I was aware that this would be a process, and that in order to move forward with how we want to do things here, we need to establish some continuity and culture in that room. As I mentioned before, I believe that we make progress every single day. Although I don’t think this program is anywhere close to where it needs to be or where we want to go, I do believe that the children are buying in, that they are working hard, and that we are making progress.”
Caleb Rogers getting used to his new role as an interior lineman
Caleb Rogers, the sole returning starter from 2023 for Texas Tech, has showcased versatility by transitioning from tackle positions to the interior line.
According to McGuire, Rogers has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and love for the team. The plan is to utilize him at guard or center, with most spring reps occurring at guard, although he’s capable of playing center as well. McGuire highlights Rogers’ adaptability, as he can also fill in at tackle if needed.
This flexibility not only addresses immediate needs but also enhances Rogers’ potential for future opportunities, potentially making him a valuable asset at multiple positions, including tackle, at the collegiate and professional levels.
Davion Carter Impressive transfer
This offseason, Davion Carter moved from Memphis to Texas Tech, and the Red Raiders knew right away that he would be a factor. He seems to have impressed McGuire thus far.
McGuire predicted that “he’s going to be an inside guy.” “He’s a young man who, despite his size, is incredibly intelligent and perceptive. He performed admirably on his first day at the center. We attempted to slow things down and put him on guard to relieve some of the pressure since I believe it was moving a bit too quickly for him. He’s a kid who, in my opinion, is capable of playing any one of the three inside positions. He’s incredibly intelligent.
Who will be Texas Tech’s left tackle?
Sterling Porcher is currently seen as the frontrunner for the left tackle position, given his extensive experience, having started 25 games at Middle Tennessee. However, he faces competition from Juco signee Maurice Rodriques and unexpected contender Dalton Merryman.
Coach McGuire acknowledges Porcher’s progress in adapting to the team’s offensive system, despite his lack of experience within it. McGuire also praises Merryman’s recent return and performance, indicating that he has shown promise in competing for the left tackle spot.
Overall, the competition for the left tackle position remains open as the coaching staff continues to evaluate and develop the candidates for the role.
Sheridan Wilson is still impressive for Texas Tech.
Sophomore Sheridan Wilson has emerged as a surprising standout during spring practices for Texas Tech football. Hailing from Argyle, Texas, Wilson has impressed by running with the first team at center on occasion. According to McGuire, Wilson is one of the most improved players this offseason and has showcased a deep commitment to the team and the program.
McGuire expressed his enthusiasm for Wilson’s dedication and work ethic, noting that despite limited previous opportunities, Wilson has approached his role with the mentality of a seasoned starter. Wilson’s love for Texas Tech and his exemplary leadership qualities have made him a model player for the team’s ethos and aspirations for growth and success.
