Texas Tech Football Poised to Welcome New Offensive Coordinator
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are gearing up for a fresh offensive chapter in 2025 as they prepare to name Mack Leftwich, Texas State’s offensive coordinator, to lead their attack. With Zach Kittley departing to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic, the Red Raiders wasted no time in securing one of the most promising young minds in college football.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Leftwich has emerged as the top choice for Texas Tech, bringing with him a reputation for transforming offenses into powerhouse units. His recent success at Texas State speaks volumes, as the Bobcats’ 2024 offense ranks among the nation’s best: sixth in total offense (474.3 yards per game), 11th in scoring (37.1 points per game), and sixth in plays of 10 or more yards (207). His knack for explosive play-calling and consistent production has made him a coveted name in this year’s coaching carousel.
Leftwich’s coaching prowess became evident during his time at Incarnate Word, where he worked under G.J. Kinne. As the quarterbacks coach, he unearthed a hidden gem in Cam Ward, a relatively unknown quarterback recruit in 2020 who blossomed under his guidance. After taking on the offensive coordinator role at UIW, Leftwich followed Kinne to Texas State, where their partnership further solidified Leftwich’s reputation as a premier offensive mind.
In 2024, Leftwich’s strategic vision turned heads across the college football landscape, with reports suggesting interest from at least four Big 12 programs. His arrival at Texas Tech signals the program’s intent to maintain an electrifying offense, building on the groundwork laid by Kittley. While the official announcement is pending, the Red Raiders confirmed the hiring of Shiel Wood as their new defensive coordinator earlier this week, signaling a comprehensive effort to retool their coaching staff.
With Leftwich at the helm, Texas Tech fans can look forward to an exciting offensive era driven by innovation and dynamic play-calling.
