Recently, we explored the significant changes happening within the Texas Tech offensive line. Similarly, the Red Raider defensive line is undergoing a transformation following the departures of multi-year starters Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford Jr., along with defensive end Myles Cole’s departure to the NFL Draft.
This spring holds immense importance for the Red Raiders’ defensive front, with D-line coach Zarnell Fitch aiming to identify three new starters. Fitch engaged with the media on Monday to discuss the development of his position group during spring practices.
Key returners E’Maurion “Dooda” Banks and Quincy Ledet Jr., both of whom started games last season, are poised to contend for starting positions in 2024. Fitch shared his observations on their progress, emphasizing Banks’ remarkable growth since their initial encounter and highlighting Ledet’s current strong form and the team’s focus on continuous improvement for the upcoming season.
Sophomore Trevon McAlpine, who saw action in eight games last season, is emerging as a valuable rotational player. Fitch praised McAlpine’s explosiveness and expressed his determination to help him realize his full potential.
Rice transfer De’Braylon Carroll brings valuable maturity and attitude to the group, according to Fitch, who also mentioned the positive influence of Nevada transfer James Hansen’s experience and stability.
Fitch identified several young players who have impressed during spring practices, including Braylon Rigsby, Trevonne McAlpine, and Jayden Coffield, expressing excitement about their development and the need for consistency.
Regarding the overall depth of the defensive line, Fitch acknowledged the positive trajectory but emphasized the importance of hard work over mere talk, signaling a shift in focus for the unit.
