Texas Tech Strengthens Defense with Another Top FCS Safety in Transfer Portal
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are making significant strides to revamp their defense for the 2025 season. Following the appointment of Shiel Wood as the new defensive coordinator, the team has been actively engaging with the transfer portal to bring in talent and strengthen weak areas. A key highlight of this effort is the addition of Cole Wisniewski, a standout safety from North Dakota State.
Wisniewski, an FCS All-American in 2023, has decided to continue his football journey in Lubbock, as reported by multiple sources. Known for his stellar performances, the Sparta, Wisconsin, native made waves in 2023 by leading all Division I players with an impressive eight interceptions. His ability to dominate on the field has earned him recognition as one of the best defensive players at the FCS level. Despite missing the 2024 season due to injury, his potential remains undiminished, and his move to Texas Tech signals a fresh chapter for both player and program.
The Red Raiders’ defense struggled throughout the past season, ranking 123rd in total defense and tied for 120th in scoring defense among FBS teams. This performance led to the departure of former defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter, paving the way for Wood’s arrival from the University of Houston. Wood’s mission to rebuild the unit is already yielding promising results, with Wisniewski’s commitment being a notable win for the program.
Joining Texas Tech’s defensive lineup, Wisniewski is expected to bring a much-needed boost to the secondary, an area where the team has faced consistent challenges. His track record at North Dakota State, a program known for producing NFL-caliber players, sets high expectations for his impact in the Red Raiders’ defense.
As the team continues its preparations for the upcoming season, Wisniewski’s addition underscores the Red Raiders’ determination to bounce back with a stronger defensive unit. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this new chapter unfolds for both the player and the program.
