Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer recently sat down with Late Kick’s Josh Pate to provide an update on the football program following its first scrimmage of spring practice. DeBoer expressed satisfaction with the scrimmage but noted areas of weakness in the offensive line and defensive backfield, which he plans to address in the upcoming transfer portal window.

“We’re a bit short in a couple of position groups: defensive backfield and offensive line,” DeBoer stated. “We need to bolster our numbers in those areas. While we may not always hit our targets precisely, we aim to get closer than where we currently stand.”

DeBoer also discussed his lack of SEC recruiting experience and how his staff is helping him adapt. Reflecting on his initial three months in Tuscaloosa, he outlined differences in his coaching approach compared to his predecessor, Nick Saban.

Regarding Alabama’s first scrimmage, DeBoer shared his initial thoughts, highlighting learning opportunities, particularly with penalties indicating players still adjusting. He praised quarterback Jalen Milroe’s versatile skill set, emphasizing his dual-threat abilities and progress in grasping the offense. DeBoer commended all quarterbacks for their contributions and noted their improvement during practice sessions.
