The hero of Hibs, who is currently at Aston Villa, has shared a humorous story with a football icon.

John McGinn, a star for Hibs and captain of Aston Villa, has disclosed how a Ballon d’Or winner left him hanging.

The German legend Lothar Matthaus has been encouraging current Villans manager Unai Emery to take a chance on the Bayern Munich position. McGinn relocated from Easter Road to Birmingham in 2018, and he has flourished under the former manager of Sevilla and Arsenal.

Not only was he an important member of Steve Clarke’s Scotland team, but that didn’t assist the midfield player when he ran into Matthaus in the Middle East. And he hasn’t let go of it as Aston Villa defeats Lille on penalties to advance in the Europa Conference League. When questioned about Matthaus’ remarks on Emery, he told Birmingham Live, “I’m still a bit wounded.” When I greeted Lothar Matthaus in Dubai, he really pied me!

“I actually said hello to him while we were in the elevator. And he paid me no attention at all. It was not very excellent. Teams will be linked to Emery, but I hope he’s content where he is. He and his team are a pleasure to have here, and we hope they will stay for many more years.

“Watching him [on the touchline] is brilliant.” My performance did not warrant penalties on Thursday when the game went into extra time, so he was obviously scrutinizing everyone when he chose the penalties.

“We want to make it nine points clear and give ourselves a chance to do something special because we have another big game on Saturday.”
