It will be difficult for New York to decide what to do with perhaps its finest player.

Will a key player go from the New York Yankees this offseason?

Though the 2024 season is still early, rumors regarding the future of great slugger Juan Soto have not abated. Soto will become a free agency at the end of the season, having been acquired by New York this past offseason in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres.
Soto has had a fantastic start to the season for the Yankees, and it’s obvious that they intend to retain him for the foreseeable future. Though it’s uncertain what will happen, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that New York will make a “big play” to keep him.

“With the Yankees surrendering their rotation depth to get him, they almost certainly will make a big play to keep him long-term (with potential competition coming from the crosstown New York Mets),” Heyman stated. “And because of the legendary team’s winning record, there’s reason to think Soto, a free agent after the season, will enjoy it in New York.

Although it seems inevitable that Soto will become a free agent and not sign a contract before then, it wouldn’t be all that shocking if he decided to go back to New York. He appears to be the final component the Yankees were lacking, and they can pay him.

In 2023, New York had a terrible offensive and struggled. The middle of the lineup needed some support because the Yankees were sparse in the outfield. Both of the club’s problems were promptly resolved by Soto. At the young age of 25, he already ranks among baseball’s finest players.

The Yankees should definitely incur all expenses to get Soto back to the city.
