On March 8, more than 130 Year 7 boys from seven nearby schools participated in the competition, which resulted in St. Peter’s High School “A” being named the winners.

Throughout the course of the day, ten school teams played round robin matches. St. Peter’s ‘A’ won Pool A, while St. John Fisher won Pool B.

The top four teams from each pool advanced to the knockout phase of the competition, and St. Peter’s ‘A’ emerged victorious against Deanery ‘A’ to win the Warriors Cup.

“It was great to be able to organise and plan the first-ever 9-a-side Warriors Cup Competition,” remarked Tom Marsh, the community development officer for the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation, in reference to the competition.

The quality of rugby on display was outstanding, and the school teachers deserve a great deal of respect for volunteering their time to assist in coaching the players and raising them to such high standards.

“It was a true pleasure to organize the event, and I am excited to host more age groups and genders in addition to the Y7 Boys event next year.

“I would like to congratulate St Peter’s ‘A’ on winning the first ever Warriors Cup, and we send our best wishes ahead of the Champion Schools Final at Wembley Stadium.”

“Thank you to the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation for organizing and inviting us to the inaugural Wigan Warriors 9’s Festival,” Mr. Ashton, a teacher at St. Peter’s High School, continued.

“There was lots of excellent rugby on show, and both of our teams had a fantastic time competing against other schools from across the borough.”

The following high schools participated in the competition: Cansfield, Shevington, Deanery, St. John Fisher, Up Holland, and St. Edmund Arrowsmith.
