Newly appointed Las Vegas Raiders head coach  wasted no time in making decisions that signify a departure from the previous leadership under former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Owner Mark Davis’ choice of Pierce is seen as a clear rejection of Bill Belichick’s “Patriot Way.”

In a notable move, Pierce has enlisted his former head coach with the New York Giants, Tom Coughlin, as a consultant to assist in assembling the Raiders’ next coaching staff. This decision carries significance, especially in light of a tense team meeting earlier in the season.

During the 2023 season, the Raiders had notable connections with former Patriots, including Tom Brady’s expressed interest in minority ownership and McDaniels’ signings of Jimmy Garoppolo and Jakobi Meyers in free agency. However, the McDaniels experiment came to an abrupt end on November 1 when he was fired, following discussions about concerns with his coaching style.

Amidst this, Antonio Pierce defended McDaniels and the coaching staff in a team meeting by referencing the Giants’ victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. According to Jay Glazer’s report on Fox Sports, Pierce emphasized the belief that they could beat any opponent, a sentiment that did not sit well with McDaniels. This division within the team ultimately played a role in Mark Davis’ decision.

Choosing to stick with the “Giants’ way,” Davis appointed Pierce as the permanent head coach, rejecting the opportunity to hire Belichick and continue the “Patriot Way” for the 2024 season. Davis sees in Pierce and Coughlin the essence of a team that defeated Belichick’s Patriots, aiming to establish a foundation that embodies that winning spirit for the Raiders moving forward.
