The New York Yankees are actively exploring trade options and considering internal solutions to fill the void left by Gerrit Cole’s injury ahead of Opening Day. Reports from Bob Nightengale of USA Today suggest that they are revisiting discussions with the Chicago White Sox regarding a potential trade for Dylan Cease, although terms have not been agreed upon. Additionally, FanSided’s Josh Wilson suggests that the Yankees could pursue a trade with the Cleveland Guardians for Shane Bieber, a two-time All-Star, as an alternative option.

Wilson speculates that the Yankees might be willing to offer prospects to entice Cleveland into a deal, especially given their apparent urgency to secure a dependable arm for their rotation.

While the Guardians have been viewed as potential sellers for Bieber due to his impending free agency and projected contract demands of around $95 million over five years, reports from Tim Britton of The Athletic indicate that they may also be considering their competitiveness in the AL Central race for the 2024 season. MLB insider Jon Heyman suggests that Cleveland’s chances of contending could influence their decision on Bieber’s availability, though recent developments with the Yankees’ situation may impact their stance.

Wilson notes that the Guardians may have initially tested the trade market for Bieber but ultimately decided against pursuing a deal due to unfavorable terms. However, the evolving circumstances, particularly the Yankees’ increased need for pitching, could prompt a reassessment of their position.
