Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure in Las Vegas is drawing to a close, with the Raiders anticipated to release the veteran quarterback on Wednesday. Additionally, wide receiver Hunter Renfrow is also expected to be released, as reported by The Athletic. This decision comes shortly after the Raiders reached an agreement with veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew on a two-year, $25 million contract in free agency, with $15 million guaranteed.

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly considering their options at the quarterback position for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, scheduled from April 25-27 in Detroit.

This development arises a year after the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a significant three-year, $72.75 million deal, with $34 million guaranteed. Garoppolo’s signing was notable for reuniting him with former Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, who served as the offensive coordinator in New England during Garoppolo’s tenure with the Patriots from 2014-17.

The Raiders are set to free up $11.269 million in cap space while incurring a dead money hit of $17.068 million when they release Jimmy Garoppolo, according to The Athletic.

Multiple teams are reportedly interested in signing 32-year-old quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, despite his impending two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

The Raiders’ initial plan to transition away from former quarterback Derek Carr and former coach Jon Gruden officially fell through after the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager David Ziegler in November 2023. Towards the end of the season, Garoppolo found himself benched in favor of rookie Aidan O’Connell, especially as he was leading the league in interceptions by Week 9.

Gardner Minshew, aged 27, is set to compete with 25-year-old Aidan O’Connell, a fourth-round pick by the Raiders in the 2023 draft, for the starting quarterback position in Las Vegas, as reported by ESPN.

During the 2023 season, Minshew proved his worth by starting 13 games in place of injured starter Anthony Richardson and contributing to the Colts’ late-season playoff push. He achieved notable statistics, throwing for 15 touchdowns and a career-high 3,305 yards, earning him recognition as an AFC Pro Bowl alternate.

In addition to Minshew and O’Connell, the Raiders’ quarterback room also includes Anthony Brown, who is currently on a non-guaranteed reserve/future contract.

Jimmy Garoppolo had a mixed performance in his six starts last season, throwing seven touchdowns but also nine interceptions. He completed 110-of-168 passes for a total of 1,205 passing yards before ultimately being benched.

Garoppolo was sidelined for a Week 4 loss to the Chargers due to a concussion and also missed a Week 7 matchup against the Bears due to a back injury.

Originally a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2014, Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers in October 2017. During his time with San Francisco, he led the team to three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance.
