Los Angeles Rams

The Rams’ choice to use a backup quarterback hasn’t exactly won over fans.

Fans don’t seem to understand that the Los Angeles Rams hired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on the same day that Aaron Donald announced his retirement. Although he will miss the first two games of the 2024 season due to suspension, Garoppolo will serve as Matthew Stafford’s backup.

Fans of the Rams expressed their dissatisfaction with the deal on social media. Over the past week, there has been a lot of discussion about quarterback musical chairs, with many suggesting that there are better options available than the seasoned Garoppolo.

“Why Garoppolo?” ask Rams fans.
Justin Fields and Russell Wilson joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kenny Pickett was traded to the Eagles of Philadelphia. Desmond Ridder is going to the Arizona Cardinals, an NFC West opponent of the Rams. The New York Jets are now trying to find a new stadium for

Wilson Zach.

Not even close to all of the opportunities that come with free agency. Stafford’s backup quarterback during the second half of 2023, Carson Wentz, is still a free agent. Joe Flacco signed with the Indianapolis Colts just a few days ago. Josh Dobbs, Ryan Tannehill, and other players are still unsigned.

It makes logical that supporters would wonder how the Rams selected Garoppolo given the abundance of viable names. For Los Angeles, the best-case scenario is that Stafford stays healthy for the foreseeable future and that Garoppolo plays just in Week 18, when the Rams are taking a break before the postseason.

For the Rams to feel at ease designating Jimmy Garoppolo as Stafford’s backup, what qualities did they see in him?

Although Jimmy G is primarily remembered by Rams supporters for his game-winning interception in the 2021 NFC Championship game

That does not do the production over the remainder of his career justice in order to send Los Angeles to Super Bowl LVI. Although at a middling to back of the pack level, Garoppolo has the skill to start in the NFL. His floor and ceiling are known, but for the most of the other candidates—Jonathan Fields, Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, and even Carson Wentz—you cannot say the same at this time.

It’s also critical to remember that, with LA’s present roster, they won’t be a successful club in the post-Aaron Donald era if something were to happen to Matthew Stafford. Garoppolo is a capable player who can fill in for an extended period of time. The NFL is incredibly competitive, and losing even one

game can mean the difference between watching from home on your couch or making it to the playoffs.

With a simplified game plan, you can count on Garoppolo to keep LA competitive for a week or two. What about Field, Pickett, or Ridder? Can you say the same? Even though Wentz helped the Rams defeat the 49ers in Week 18 of the previous season, he is still a dangerous player, and for whatever reason, the other teams in the NFL don’t seem to be too keen on having him in their locker room.

Whether you like him or not, Jimmy Garoppolo gives the Rams quarterback room a much-needed professional presence.angry with the Rams’ choice of backup quarterback
