The struggling Parramatta Eels are poised for a significant overhaul when new coach Jason Ryles arrives

The Parramatta Eels are set for a significant overhaul when incoming coach Jason Ryles arrives in November. Ryles will face complex issues with the roster, as the team has underperformed in recent years, currently sitting sixteenth with only four wins this season. Following their 2022 grand final appearance, injuries and suspensions led to a disappointing tenth-place finish last year. Their poor performance continued into 2024, resulting in the sacking of coach Brad Arthur in May after 11 years with the team.

More changes are anticipated, with caretaker coach Trent Barrett not required next year and players Ryan Matterson and Maika Sivo allowed to speak with other clubs. Clint Gutherson might be moved from fullback, with Ryles expected to install Blaize Talagi in the No.1 jersey to keep him at the club amid interest from other teams.

Barrett noted that many players are playing for their futures. Ryles will face pressure to end the club’s 37-year premiership drought, but with ageing stars on large contracts, quick changes will be challenging. James Hooper called Ryles’ role a “poison chalice,” predicting initial difficulties before improvement.

Key players in Ryles’ rebuild include:

  • Clint Gutherson: Contracted until 2025, his leadership and consistent performance are valued, but knee issues may see him moved to the centres. A captaincy shift to Mitch Moses could affect his future.
  • Maika Sivo: A cult hero with form and discipline issues, contracted until 2025 but allowed to explore other options.
  • Reagan Campbell-Gillard: An enforcer since 2020, his form has dipped. Contracted until 2025, he needs to perform well to secure a new deal.
  • Blaize Talagi: A future star, the Eels are keen to retain him amid interest from other clubs. His contract situation needs resolving.
  • Dylan Brown: His unusual nine-year contract extends to 2031. His partnership with Mitch Moses is crucial for the Eels’ success.
  • Ryan Matterson: Far from his best, allowed to speak with other clubs despite being contracted until 2026.
  • Shaun Lane: His form has declined due to injuries. Contracted until 2026, moving him will be difficult.
  • Joe Ofahengaue: Patchy performance, off contract in 2025, might be moved early.
  • Charlie Guymer: Impressive debut cut short by injury. On a developmental deal expiring this season, re-signing him should be a priority given potential veteran departures.
