Mark Pope’s appointment as the next head coach of Kentucky men’s basketball has taken the Big Blue Nation by surprise, with many reacting to the news with shock. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, Pope’s initial contract with the Wildcats has been revealed.

Reportedly, Kentucky will pay Pope an average of $5.5 million over the course of a five-year contract. This places him among the upper echelon of college basketball coaches in terms of salary, ranking him as the sixth-highest-paid coach for this season. Notably, Pope’s salary surpasses that of coaches like Dan Hurley, Scott Drew, and Nate Oats, as reported by Front Office Sports.

There may have been speculation that Pope’s hiring could have been an opportunity for Kentucky to allocate more funds towards NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals by securing him on a smaller contract, perhaps in the range of $2-3 million. However, it appears that this assumption was overly optimistic given the reported terms of Pope’s contract.

Despite any challenges in selling the hire, Kentucky fans are encouraged to support Pope as he endeavors to elevate the program. There’s confidence that Pope will wholeheartedly dedicate himself to the task of making Kentucky basketball exceptional, dispelling any doubts about his commitment to the program’s success.
