The time is now right for Senators to go after a strong potential free agent for…

Ottawa Senators are looking at potential free agency targets, and it seems like they might be onto something. Matt Roy, a right-shot defenceman from the Los Angeles Kings, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. The source of this information is Bruce Garrioch, who is known for being well-informed.

This rumour comes from seeing two general managers, Steve Staios and Rob Blake, chatting together. It’s possible they were discussing Arthur Kaliyev, a restricted free agent who may need a change of scenery based on his recent performance. Kaliyev has a history with Sens owner Michael Andlauer and GM Steve Staios, making him an intriguing option.

During Kaliyev’s time with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL, Andlauer and Staios had similar roles with the team. They both saw Kaliyev’s goal-scoring abilities, with seasons of 31, 51, and 44 goals. It’s possible that something could happen in the future, but that’s not our main focus right now.

Back to Garrioch, he mentioned rumors about the Ottawa Senators trying to sign defenceman Matt Roy. Roy fits the bill for what the Senators need, playing over 21 minutes a night and delivering 197 hits last season. However, it’s strange that the Kings didn’t re-sign him, given his importance to the team.

We’ll have to wait until July 1st to see how things unfold. If you’re a fan of Matt Roy and the Ottawa Senators, you might be in luck on Monday. Stay tuned with us at Last Word for more coverage of the 2024 NHL free agency period.
