The Toronto Raptors severed their relationship with veteran forward Thaddeus Young a few weeks ago. The Toronto Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets, two teams who compete with the Philadelphia 76ers, made a trade at the NBA trade deadline in 2024 that involved the exchange of multiple veterans.

Spencer Dinwiddie, an experienced guard, was signed by the Raptors. Dennis Schroder, a guard, and Young were selected by the Nets in the interim. The same day, Young was waived by Brooklyn, although Schroder, 30, will remain on the team for the time being.

After the 2023–2024 NBA season ends, Young will age 36, so the move wasn’t a surprise. Young is a valuable experienced role player for a club that is in the running for the championship. Given that the Nets are currently 21-33 and fired their head coach this week, it is evident that Brooklyn has failed to establish itself as a serious competitor in the age of post-superteam basketball.

Young figured out his next move this week. According to AZ Central’s Duane Rankin, he will, as anticipated, join a contender, joining the Kevin Durant and Devin Booker-led Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference.

Young moves out of the Eastern Conference for the first time since the San Antonio Spurs moved him to the Raptors during the 2021–2022 campaign.

Even though Young has moved around the league a lot over the years, he made his NBA debut by earning a respectable role with the Sixers. Following his 12th overall selection by Philadelphia in the 2007 NBA Draft, Young played an average of 21 minutes per game as a rookie. He was a full-time starter by year two.

Young shot 50% from the field and averaged 14 points and six rebounds in 516 games for the Sixers. Young played for six separate teams after spending his first seven seasons with the Sixers.

Young will play the rest of the 2023–2024 NBA season for the Suns, his seventh team since 2007. He brings to Phoenix 57 games of postseason experience.
