The Yankees have selected their starting catcher

The rivalry for the catcher position was still unresolved as the New York Yankees started the 2024 season. Austin Wells began to improve during the close of the 2023 campaign, and throughout spring training, his numbers started to go upward. Despite this, he has only managed a.097 batting average and a.250 on-base percentage in the first few weeks of the 2024 regular season due to offensive struggles.

Jose Trevino, a veteran, has performed admirably on both the offensive and defensive ends. With one home run, six RBIs, a 15.8% strikeout rate, a 13.2% walk rate, and a 106 wRC+, he has amassed a.242 batting average, a.342 on-base percentage, and a.333 slugging percentage in 11 games.

After missing the majority of spring training due to a calf injury, Trevino had a solid start to the season just when it appeared he would lose his starting position.

Trevino Is Providing Outstanding Defense For The Yankees
It’s interesting to note that Trevino has kept up a strike rate of 55.7%, which leads the league by 2.2%. In catcher framing, he is also tied for second, demonstrating his outstanding defensive abilities even more.

Trevino has also performed well when there are runners in scoring position, batting.364/.462/.364 in just 11 at-bats while dishing out four hits and five RBIs.

Trevino had never exceeded a 100 wRC+ in his career, thus this result came as a surprise. With the Yankees in 2022, he had his finest season yet, hitting.248 with a.283 on-base percentage, 11 home runs, and 43 RBIs. Remarkably, he is reaching a walk rate in the double digits for the first time in his career and seems to be maturing.

Trevino’s deal runs through 2026, which is fortunate for the Yankees since it means they can guarantee great performance from the catcher position without having to shell out a lot of cash. But this shouldn’t overshadow Wells’ defensive progress; all he needs to do is get better at bat and start making more regular contributions.
