Because general manager Brad Holmes has made excellent draft selections, the roster’s talent level has inevitably increased along with the Detroit Lions’ success over the past few years. There is some bias when it comes to signing veterans since they may not be a good match.

The days of overpaying to sign some players and/or signing players who had few, if any, other options are long gone. Players now want to play in Detroit and, if possible, remain for the long haul.

3. Wide receiver Marvin Jones Jones returned to the Lions in 2023 as a free agent. Before departing the squad in October of last year to deal with a personal situation, he had little to show for his five receptions for 35 yards. He was released to allow him to finish that without feeling pressured to return.

There have been no signs during the summer as to whether Jones’s personal situation has been resolved or whether he intends to return to football. Though he had passed his prime, he remained a valuable receiver well into his 30s.

.. His seasoned presence and production as a reserve receiver could be advantageous to NFL receiving corps if things are going well off the field.

It’s regrettable because of the events that caused him to depart the Lions midway through the previous campaign. However, given his age of 34, it’s plausible—if not more so—that Jones’ career is finished as soon as there are any updates on him or any reports that he has signed a contract with a team.
