Three more Yankees players are sent to Minor League camp.

The Yankees have made three additional movements today as they continue to reallocate players to Minor League camp in order to get their everyday players more playing time. Tanner Tully, a left-hander, was optioned to Minor League camp prior to the game. It has since been announced that J.C. Escarra and T.J. Rumfield were also sent down. This does not preclude these players from playing in Spring Training games; in fact, Luis Gil was already assigned after his outing against the Tampa Bay Rays today.
This merely clarifies who will and won’t make the team, and none of the players on the reassignment list should come as a surprise given that the Yankees didn’t add a starting pitcher, first baseman, or catcher to their 40-man roster when none of the key players at those positions had yet to sustain an injury.

The Yankees are still making changes as spring training progresses.
Tanner Tully had a solid start earlier in the week against a very good New York Mets lineup, but the Yankees were not going to bring him in for MLB starts on Opening Day. After a brief spell in the Korean Baseball Organization, he was signed as a Minor League free agent. He also spent some time in the first half of the season with the Yankees. The southpaw is probably lower on the depth chart because he is a soft-tosser who depends more on movement and command than on velocity to get outs. This is not a good look in the modern game.

But depth doesn’t hurt, and in the event of the Yankees’ worst-case scenario—which you always have to be ready for—he could pitch a few innings in a pinch. He has not yet made his Major League debut, but in 805 innings pitched in the minor leagues, he has a 4.10 ERA and 3.90 FIP. J.C. Escarra, another veteran that the Yankees signed in MiLB free agency, had played overseas baseball the previous season and had been affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles his whole career. He had not yet made his Major League debut.
