Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy golf league reboot scheduled for January
The relaunch of the inaugural season of TGL, led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and presented by SoFi, is set to kick off on January 7, 2025, in prime time on ESPN and ESPN+. The league, consisting of six teams, had initially planned to commence play on January 9, 2024, but faced delays due to a storm that caused damage to the venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In preparation for the upcoming season, TGL unveiled designs for its new 250,000-square-foot venue located on the Palm Beach State College campus. Matches are scheduled for the first three Tuesdays of January, coinciding with the NFL playoffs and the College Football Playoff.
TMRW Sports founder and CEO Mike McCarley emphasized the strategic timing of TGL’s launch, aiming to capture the attention of sports fans amidst the excitement of prime time sports and the start of the PGA Tour season. The league’s new steel-supported SoFi Center promises to deliver a unique fan experience, boasting 1,500 seats surrounding the field of play, which closely resembles the size of a football field.
Top PGA Tour players including Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Collin Morikawa, alongside Woods and McIlroy, have committed to participate in the league. Matches will feature three-man teams competing on a virtual course, with real grass tee boxes and the innovative Green Zone short-game complex.
TGL also outlined match rules, including a 40-second shot clock and penalties for time violations, to ensure smooth gameplay. Each team will have timeouts at their disposal, with specific limits per session.
Representing cities such as Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Jupiter, Florida, the league aims to bring an exciting new dimension to team golf. Additional details, including rosters for specific teams, will be announced in due course.
