Together, seven Phillies shut out the Blue Jays.

DUNEDIN, Florida — In spring training baseball action on Thursday, the Phillies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 thanks to a home run by Cristian Pache to center field and a seven-pitch shutout by the team’s pitchers.

In the fifth inning, Matt Kroon was driven in by Trea Turner’s single off Connor Cooke, giving Philadelphia the lead.

In the sixth, Pache drove home a two-out single off Hayden Juenger to make it 2-0.

In the seventh inning, the Phillies scored three runs to finish the total. After loading the bases, Toronto left-hander Jimmy Burnette scored a run by walking. Luis Quinones took his place, hitting William Simoneit with a pitch to add another run. Carlos De La Cruz hit into a force out to score a third run.

The first four innings were shared by Philadelphia’s Max Castillo and Kolby Allard, with Connor Brogdon, Yunior Marte, Nick Snyder, David Parkinson, and Taylor Lehman taking care of the rest. Allard became victorious.

Jose Berrios and Mitch White, the starters for Toronto, both threw two perfect innings. When Cooke took over in the fifth, the loss fell on him.

With two hits, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the Jays’ offensive.

Before facing the New York Yankees in Tampa on Friday night, Toronto had a record of 2-4 in preseason play.
