With the news that Michigan hired running backs coach Tony Alford from Ohio State to fill the same role with the Wolverines for the 2024 season, the college football coaching wheel took yet another noteworthy spin.
Jeremiah Smith, the Buckeyes’ largest recruiting acquisition this cycle, seems taken aback by the news, as he expressed his amazement on X/Twitter.
Consensus among the four national recruiting agencies placed Smith as the top-ranked prospect overall for the 2023 college football recruiting class.
Only defensive line coach Larry Johnson, who began working with the team in 2014, has had a longer tenure than Alford.
Alford will take over for departing coach Mike Hart, an RBs coach and former Michigan running back who left the program this offseason.
Alford, who coached running backs for a quarter of a century before joining the Buckeyes in 2015, was a former running back himself.
