Since Luke Fickell took over at Wisconsin, one significant improvement he’s made to the roster is the influx of talent at the quarterback position. Fickell orchestrated the recruitment of high-caliber transfers like Tanner Mordecai, Braedyn Locke, Nick Evers, and most recently, Tyler Van Dyke, adding depth and skill to the quarterback corps.

However, the standout addition to the quarterback room may well be Mabrey Mettauer, the first prominent high school quarterback signed under Fickell’s tenure. Mettauer committed to Wisconsin during his junior year, providing Fickell with a welcome holiday gift by pledging on December 24, 2022. Despite receiving offers from prestigious programs such as Florida State, Florida, Miami, and LSU, Mettauer remained steadfast in his commitment to Wisconsin.

Measuring in at 6’5 and 220 pounds, Mettauer possesses the physique of a prototypical college quarterback. Over his three-year tenure as a starter at The Woodlands High School in Texas, Mettauer amassed impressive stats, throwing for over 7,300 yards and 86 touchdowns while only being intercepted 12 times. Additionally, he showcased his dual-threat capabilities by adding over 1,400 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground. In his senior year alone, he threw for 2,305 yards and tallied 29 touchdowns to just 1 interception.

Mettauer’s highlight reel underscores why he’s rated as a four-star prospect by both ESPN and Rivals. His arm strength is evident, whether he’s threading a needle on an out pattern or launching deep bombs effortlessly. His ability to hit deep routes consistently forces defenses to defend the entire field. Not only is he accurate, especially on long throws, but he also displays excellent pocket awareness. While not a sprinter, his athleticism enables him to make plays on the ground when needed.

Furthermore, Mettauer excels in handling an RPO offense, demonstrating adeptness at making correct reads and executing precise passes. He seamlessly transitions from handing off to the running back to delivering the ball to an open receiver. Additionally, he’s a threat as a runner, whether executing reads, scrambling, or designed runs.

Another quarterback joining Wisconsin is Milos Spasojevic, a preferred walk-on from Minnetonka High School in Minnesota. Standing at 6’4 and 210 pounds, Spasojevic, despite being graded as a high two-star prospect, possesses a solid arm and exhibits impressive pocket presence. While not possessing elite athleticism, his ability to maneuver the pocket effectively and make plays when necessary adds value to the quarterback room.

In summary, the quarterback class earns a well-deserved grade of an A. Mettauer, ranked as a top-10 quarterback in his class by ESPN and Rivals, is undoubtedly deserving of his four-star status. As an early enrollee, he’s poised to contend for the starting quarterback position as a redshirt freshman in 2025. Spasojevic, though a walk-on, brings promise to the team, and his development will be worth monitoring.
