Supporter group New Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay has encouraged Hibs fans to give Mackay an opportunity to prove himself. Mackay’s hiring has sparked anger. Supporters have already vowed to demonstrate against Mackay’s appointment; the former SFA performance director gained the backing of anti-racism activists following therapy, but his involvement in a text scandal from over ten years ago still causes some resentment.

The former Ross County, Wigan, and Cardiff manager responded to the divisive response to his appointment yesterday by saying, “I completely understand everyone has points of view.” I would ask that you evaluate me based on who I am as a person and what I can do moving ahead for the Hibernian Football Club.

“I’ve played football for thirty years, but I’ve spent seven of those years in Scotland—four with the Scottish FA and almost three at Ross County.I would like people to judge me based on the person I meet and the impression I give my football club, as I have a strong enthusiasm for our game, the club I work for, and the national association I was a part of.

“I’m proud and privileged to work for Hibernian Football Club and that being the case I’m determined to do everything I can to make sure we have success. They’ll see someone that is driven and wanting to do the best for their club.”

Mackay was in attendance at Easter Road last night as Hibs won 3-0 under the guidance of interim head coach David Gray. The new sporting director, who doesn’t officially start until June 1, has been charged with leading the search for a successor to Nick Montgomery, who became the fourth manager sacked in under two-and-a-half years by Hibs earlier this week.

Gray welcomed Mackay’s arrival, saying: “I think it’s a very good appointment. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, especially in Scotland and England. I think he’ll be a real good addition to the football department.

Understanding Scottish football is crucial, in my opinion, as it’s a tough, demanding, and rigorous competition. The expectations to work and play at this amazing football team are very high, and for good reason. The more knowledge you have about the league, the players who succeed there and those who can struggle, is beneficial since there is always pressure in the league.
