TRENDING: League Two survival helps a forgotten former Portsmouth and Sunderland man pull off a rescue act.

The left-back had a dismal two-year stint at Fratton Park, appearing 31 times.

Even if Pompey is on his way to the Championship, one member of the team this year has merely kept his team in the Football League.

By mutual consent, Denver Hume left Fratton Park in February to play regular first-team football for Grimsby.

This season, the left-back has started two Bristol Street Motors Trophy games despite not making a league appearance for the Blues.

He joined a Mariners team that was woefully falling into non-league play and ranked 20th in League Two.

But on Saturday, thanks to goals from Liam Smith and Donovan Wilson, they defeated Swindon 2-0 late to ensure their safety.

Hume played in both games as a substitute after losing his starting position due to a one-match ban.

However, after joining David Artell, he has primarily been a regular at left wing-back, making a total of 15 games (12 of which have been starts).

His goal in the pivotal 3-0 victory over Crewe earlier this month was his first for any team since he scored against Plymouth for Sunderland in May 2021.

Hume signed a six-month contract with Grimsby, but his future is still unknown as he becomes a free agent this summer.

After a disappointing two years at Fratton Park, he has certainly put himself back in the shop window during his stay in Lincolnshire.

He was signed by Danny Cowley for £200,000 from Sunderland in January 2022, although he only made 31 appearances because of injury struggles at first and was left off the club roster later.

Under interim manager Simon Bassey, he started for Pompey against Spurs in a 1-0 FA Cup loss in January 2023 after bouncing back from a significant back injury.

However, he’d make just more six appearances following John Mousinho’s arrival as head coach, including a sole league start against Morecambe in April 2023.

Despite being fit for the 2023-24 campaign, Hume was behind Connor Ogilvie and Jack Sparkes for a left-back role and was included in just three squads.

After declining a transfer to Grimsby and Swindon in the previous summer, the 25-year-old eventually left Fratton Park in February to join the League Two team.

Now that Pompey has moved to the Championship, Hume might be shopping around for a new team this summer.
