A judge deemed it “utterly deplorable” that a football fan had made fun of the late six-year-old Sunderland mascot, Bradley Lowery.

When Dale Houghton, 31, appeared in court on Monday after an altercation during Sheffield Wednesday’s game against Sunderland on Friday, he admitted to committing a public order offense and might now face jail time.

Authorities were notified by sources that two men had reportedly used a picture of Bradley to agitate rival supporters at Hillsborough Stadium. The picture was then extensively circulated on social media.

During his fight with neuroblastoma, the six-year-old touched the hearts of the country and helped raise over £1 million for charity before passing away in 2017.

Alongside former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, he led England out at Wembley as the team’s mascot.

District Judge James Gould told Houghton, “Your actions are utterly deplorable,” while he was seated in Sheffield magistrates’ court.

He declared that jail time was one of the available choices for punishment.

Houghton, a resident of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was given bail and is scheduled for sentencing on November 17.

Following the event, more than £11,000 has been raised for the Bradley Lowery Foundation.

The Super Brads Pad, a vacation house for families of children with terminal illnesses that the charity is constructing near Scarborough, will be the beneficiary of the cash.
