NEW YORK Sheldon Keefe, the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was fined US$25,000 by the NHL for “unprofessional conduct directed at the officials.”

Tuesday night, with 2:14 remaining in the Maple Leafs’ 6-2 loss to the visiting Vegas Golden Knights, referees gave Keefe a game misconduct and dismissed him.

Speaking with reporters following the game, Keefe declined to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his termination.

When asked how the exchange compared to other things he had said to officials, he stated, “Not going there, not going there.”

When the Leafs narrowed the deficit to 4-2 with 4:53 left in the third period, Toronto winger Mitch Marner was called for tripping on Vegas forward Chandler Stephenson, and Keefe was visibly irritated.

The Arizona Coyotes and Maple Leafs were supposed to play at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday night.

The Canadian Press released this report for the first time on February 29, 2024.
