Redshirt junior catcher Kimble Schuessler popped a ball up to right center field with one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning. Caden Cummings, a junior pinch hitter, left first base without tagging the ball after it was caught low. After realizing what had happened, the San Diego outfielder threw Cummings out at first, resulting in a double play that ended the game.

No. 16 Texas lost 6-5 to San Diego after 11 innings of play due to poor play on both sides of the ball.

Charlie Hurley, a senior right-hand pitcher for Texas, got off to a sluggish start in the mound. He gave up two hits and one run in the first inning, which placed the Longhorns behind early. He got going in the second and third innings, going 1-2-3 back-to-back, before walking three batters in the fourth.

Head coach David Pierce stated, “He started sinking the ball and he got in such a really good rhythm and had consistency on all his pitches.” “We need to make some adjustments, but it wasn’t fatigue that caused him to hit a wall,” the person said.

Due to the need to use the bullpen early in the game, eight Texas pitchers were used tonight. Following Hurley, rookie Easton Tumis managed to escape a jam with several bases loaded.

“Easton Tumis was excellent, and I wanted to see him for what he’s been this early spring,” Pierce remarked. “I’m proud of him because he struck out in a bases-loaded, clutch situation in his first Division One baseball outing at the University of Texas.”

Texas struggled greatly at hitting the ball, which was a result of their pitching and defense. San Diego finished with twelve hits, while Texas finished with ten.

The game’s first offensive burst occurred early on. In the third inning, redshirt senior Peyton Powell hit a three-run home run with two outs and two on base, launching the ball barely past the right field fence. No. 16 Texas defeated San Diego 3-1 thanks to the home run.

“Fortunately for me, it went over the fence and gave our team a good little three-run shot. I’m just trying to find a good pitch to hit,” Powell remarked. “But in the end, it doesn’t really mean that much because we didn’t release the dub.”

Powell’s home run gave Texas a little advantage, narrowly missing the Taco Shack “free tacos” sign. The game went into extra innings with a 5-5 draw after San Diego tied the score in the eighth inning with Texas failing to score.

Ryan Ward of San Diego completed the feat that Powell nearly accomplished in the fifth inning by hitting a two-run home run off the Texas bullpen above the “free tacos” sign in the tenth inning.

Texas was able to score runs when it mattered most throughout the extra innings, but eventually fell short. Earlier in the game, freshman pinch runner Dee Kennedy was thrown out trying to steal third in the eighth inning with one out and the top of the order up to bat. This was just one of the Longhorns’ multiple preventable base running errors.

Pierce remarked, “It wasn’t a great decision to steal third.” “It was just too many mistakes and bad baseball,” the player said.

The series is now level at one between Texas and San Diego. On Sunday, Tanner Witt, a redshirt junior, will take the mound to begin the clubs’ last game.
