Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid are currently in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, where they’re not only evaluating top prospective talent but also gearing up for free agency.

To bolster their chances of securing a Super Bowl three-peat, the Chiefs are in need of upgrades at the wide receiver position. With the recent departure of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which freed up around $12 million in cap space, Kansas City is reportedly eyeing Chicago Bears’ pending free agent Darnell Mooney.

Chiefs Named 'Obvious Choice' to Sign Bears $42 Million WR

According to a report by the Chicago Tribune’s Dan Wiederer on March 2, there’s speculation in Indianapolis about where Mooney will land in the upcoming free agency period. There’s a growing buzz suggesting that Mooney could potentially have a strong resurgence in 2024 at a reasonable price, with multiple sources indicating Kansas City as a potential destination.

Spotrac.com predicts Mooney could command a four-year contract worth $41.98 million. Should the 26-year-old be open to accepting a discounted offer to play alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it’s possible that Veach could negotiate a deal.

Commentators such as Brendan Sugrue from the Bears Wire and Connor Christopherson from Arrowhead Report have also weighed in on Mooney’s potential move. Sugrue believes that Kansas City has always been the obvious choice for Mooney, while Christopherson notes that amidst the ongoing speculation of wide receivers flocking to Kansas City, Mooney’s signing would actually align well with the team’s needs.
