Miles of black smoke billowed from East Memphis on Friday afternoon.

Hope Clippenger, who was passing by, said, “We saw the black smoke and thought it looked different.” She was driving along Walnut Grove.

According to Clippenger, when she noticed the smoke, she went to check on everyone’s well-being and discovered something unexpected.

She claimed that a man was attempting to put out the fire on Fernway Road by himself when she arrived.

She stated, “There was a man in his backyard who claimed to be an off-duty firefighter and who was spraying what appeared to be a work truck with his yard hose.”

You can see the truck that caught fire, identified as “ABC Professional Tree Services,” in the footage that Clippenger supplied. Action News Five spoke with Clippenger’s neighbors, who are curious as to why the truck caught fire.

Witnesses said Memphis Fire fighters were able to get the fire under control after a while, but the burned work truck and cut trees are still sitting right behind their fence.
