TRENDING NEWS:Ex-Sunderland and Manchester City man joins Irish club after Fleetwood Town coaching stint

Stephen Elliott, a former striker for Manchester City and Sunderland, has secured a new position in Irish football.

Elliott left Manchester City to join Sunderland in 2004. He played for the team for three seasons before moving to Wolves. The Republic of Ireland international played 88 games for the team throughout his tenure, scoring 23 goals, including a spectacular goal against Newcastle United in 2005. Nevertheless, the Black Cats lost the Premier League match 3-2 at St. James’ Park.

Elliott was a player for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Preston North End, Norwich City, Heart of Midlothian, Coventry City, Carlisle United, Shelbourne, Drogheda United, and Morpeth Town before retiring in 2018. Elliott left Sunderland in order to play for these teams. After that, the striker entered the media, where he wrote a column for The Echo and frequently appeared in podcasts.

Nonetheless, the forty-year-old has continued to be active in coaching, having worked with the younger levels of League One team Fleetwood Town. Elliott, though, has since been given a new position at St Patrick Athletic in Ireland: Head of Academy Football.

The Republic of Ireland international began working full-time at St Patrick’s Athletic this week, and the club has announced that Elliott will take on the role of head coach for their under-20 squad in addition to his other responsibilities.

It makes me happy to be here. “After accepting the position, Elliott stated, “I was genuinely excited when I discussed my prospect of joining the club with Garrett Kelleher, the Chairman.”My creative juices started to flow after I had a conversation about the post with Alan Mathews, a board member and technical director, and Ger O’Brien, the director of football. Coming in and contributing to the growth of an Academy that is already successful excites me much.

“All it takes to see that there is a clear path for young players to advance and have careers with us is to look at the FAI Cup final from last year and the number of St Patrick’s Athletic Academy players on the field at the end of the game—I believe it was six in total, from Jamie Lennon to Mason Melia. It is wonderful for everyone if I can contribute to something that is already excellent.”
