At the official opening of the MG High Performance Centre, the club’s state-of-the-art training and recuperation facility, Port Adelaide was joined by Hon. Mark Butler MP.

The Hon. Mark Butler MP joined PORT Adelaide to formally inaugurate the club’s brand-new, cutting-edge training and recuperation center, the MG High Performance Centre and community precinct at Alberton Oval.

The $25 million project has greatly enhanced the community’s green spaces and given access to facilities for nearby junior sports, all while transforming Alberton Oval—home of the Port Adelaide Football Club since 1880—into a top-tier high-performance sport precinct for the club’s AFL and AFLW teams.

An indoor training field, two basketball courts built to international standards, a soccer pitch, a gymnasium, wet recovery spaces, locker rooms, lecture halls, medical facilities, a commercial-grade kitchen, a player wellness area, and a media studio are all included in the new MG High Performance Centre.

One of the development’s main features is the availability of facilities for neighborhood junior sports teams, such the Northwest Junior Soccer Association and the West Adelaide Bearcats (basketball), which maximizes the area for usage by the larger community.

The Australian government contributed $15 million to the project, the South Australian government contributed $3 million, and further funds came from the AFL, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, and the club’s co-major shareholders, MG and GFG.

“With two new basketball courts and a soccer pitch, the renovated precinct will have flow-on advantages for our local sporting clubs, not just the club.

“I’m excited about how these excellent facilities will help the next Connor Rozee and Erin Phillips.”

David Koch, the chairman of Port Adelaide, has expressed gratitude to the Australian and State governments for their support of this ground-breaking initiative.

This project is much more than just a place for our football team to call home; according to Mr. Koch, it was essential in providing much-needed space for local junior sports (basketball and soccer) to practice and play, ensuring that we continue to promote sport participation at the grassroots level and offering a greatly enhanced area for the community to enjoy with their family and friends.

“Our players are really proud of the new facilities, and we have already seen an increase in community use and activation of the precinct by the local community.”

“Alberton Oval holds great significance for both our football team and the community. We are thrilled that our players, staff, and the junior sport community can now enjoy this wonderful precinct thanks to the exceptional facilities.”

The world-class AFLW training and recovery facilities in the Fos Williams Grandstand and The Precinct at Alberton, which will include a brand-new Port Store, museum, bar, and kitchen in 2022, are the last pieces of this phase of redevelopment to be completed with the opening of the MG High Performance Centre.

“Ensuring that our teams have the best opportunity for success on the field requires that we provide them with top-notch facilities. Our facilities have improved from some of the worst in the league to some of the best presently, and in the AFL, where competition is tough, it is essential to give our players access to top-notch facilities.

“Alberton Oval is evolving into a top-notch sports and leisure complex. We’re quite pleased of what we’ve accomplished here, and we know that the community, our members, and our fans will be able to enjoy it for a very long time.

“On behalf of the whole Port Adelaide Football Club, I would like to express my gratitude to Sarah Constructions, our constructors, and all of our amazing benefactors for their tremendously kind assistance.

“Everything we do at Port Adelaide revolves around our members, and this project would not have been possible without their support. We shall always be appreciative.

“We have never worked on a project as large as this reconstruction, and it will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”
