De’Braylon Carroll, a transfer, has joined Texas Tech, as revealed by head coach Joey McGuire on Tuesday, strengthening the Red Raiders’ interior defensive line.

Carroll, who will play his final year of eligibility with the Red Raiders, spent four seasons at Rice and comes to Lubbock with 101 career tackles, 19.0 tackles for loss, and 7.0 sacks. He was a seasoned presence up front for the Red Raiders as McGuire and his staff work to remodel the interior line this winter. He played in 42 games in his career for the Owls, including 20 starts.

“We were pleased to add another experienced player up front in time for our offseason workouts and spring practice,” McGuire stated. “As we’ve said throughout our tenure, we will utilize the transfer portal to bridge a gap in some positions and try to have a veteran-led team at every position. De’Braylon will be a welcomed addition to our defensive line room and the entire program.”

Carroll, who was selected to Phil Steele’s All-AAC postseason third team, ends his 2023 stint with the Owls, where he started all 13 games at nose tackle. The 2023 high school graduate from Duncanville achieved single-season career records by accumulating 46 tackles, 9.0 TFLs, and 3.5 sacks. With an 80.7 grade, he was the Owls’ highest-graded defender from the previous campaign, according to Pro Football Focus.

Carroll is a 2019 graduate of Duncanville, a top institution in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Carroll finished second in the state during his senior year, a year in which he was unanimously selected as his district’s defensive MVP and named to the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors’ second team all-state. He was named all-district on the offensive line the previous season.

Having played in all 12 of the Owls’ rookie games in 2019, he was hailed as the team’s best rookie. Carroll started all five of Rice’s games in the 2020 COVID-19 season, which was truncated. Carroll had an injury in the summer before the 2021 season that would keep him out of the game for the whole campaign. Carroll played in 12 of 13 games in 2022 after recovering from a season-ending injury. He also made two starts.

Carroll graduated in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. Over the previous four seasons (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023), Carroll was recognized as a member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
