Despite the UNC football team experiencing some inconsistency in their performance towards the end of the 2023 season, there’s no denying the talent they had at the quarterback position.

Drake Maye played a crucial role in keeping the Tar Heels competitive in the ACC, especially during their strong 6-0 start to the season, which prompted speculation in the college football world about North Carolina’s legitimacy.

Maye’s impressive stats in the first six games, including 1,902 passing yards and 12 touchdowns, with standout performances against teams like Minnesota and Syracuse, put him back in the Heisman Trophy conversation after a rocky start.

Despite UNC’s eventual 8-5 record due to a late-season collapse, Maye is still highly regarded and projected as a top-five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Furthermore, some coaches are drawing comparisons between Maye and notable NFL quarterbacks, namely Josh Allen and Justin Herbert, known for their arm strength, accuracy, and ability to evade pressure. Allen, a two-time All-Pro, has excelled despite a limited receiving corps, while Herbert was the 2021 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Another comparison is made to CJ Stroud, the former Ohio State quarterback who had a standout rookie season with the Houston Texans, leading them to a Wild Card win with impressive passing and rushing stats.

Maye’s collegiate career at UNC was remarkable, accumulating over 8,000 passing yards, 63 passing touchdowns, and 1,209 rushing yards with 16 rushing touchdowns.

While the team that will select Maye in the draft remains uncertain, his future as a top quarterback prospect appears promising.
