Trent Barrett faces a harsh setback as Jason Ryles decides on the future of the coach at Parramatta.

Nine days after being named Eels coach, Ryles received permission from the Storm to start his role with the struggling NRL team. Ryles’ strategy for the wooden spoon contenders is already in motion.

According to a report from the SMH, Ryles will be bringing his own coaching staff, but none will be from the Storm, due to his departure agreement with Melbourne which prevents him from taking anyone with him for at least a year.

Ryles’ immediate focus is securing Blaize Talagi. While Barrett is the first to be let go under Ryles, he won’t be the last. Veterans Ryan Matterson and Maika Sivo are also reportedly being told to find new teams. Co-captain Clint Gutherson is expected to be moved from the No.1 position to make room for Talagi, whose potential new spot could persuade him to stay at the club.

The 19-year-old has drawn interest from several rival teams, including the Knights, Dolphins, and Dragons, with the Red V also looking to sign his younger brother. Ryles’ top priority is to secure Talagi, who paused contract talks until a permanent head coach was appointed.

Ryles also faces the challenge of managing a squad where only Mitch Moses and Junior Paulo are locked into contracts beyond this season. Other players, like Dylan Brown, have longer contracts but with options that could impact their future.

With most of the Eels’ squad becoming free agents in November, Ryles must make quick and decisive decisions on the roster. Additionally, despite the team’s poor standing on the NRL ladder, the Eels have limited salary cap space for new signings without restructuring their top-heavy roster.
