UPDATE: Before the trip to Ipswich Town, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday makes a remark about Leeds United, calling on the players to be “braver.”

There’s no way Sheffield Wednesday will be able to eke out a point at Ipswich Town on Saturday; manager Danny Röhl is pleading with his players to behave with more boldness than they displayed in the loss to Leeds United.

The Owls suffered a 2-0 loss to their title-rivaling Yorkshire opponents on Friday night. This weekend, they will go to Ipswich Town, another team vying for promotion alongside Leeds. Wednesday is one point out of the safe spots, with an eleven-point deficit erased by some excellent recent play.

Praise for their performance against a Leeds team positioned at the opposite end of the table was bestowed onto Röhl’s team, who encouraged his players to be more daring in their technical choices in Suffolk by candidly evaluating their play in a pre-tournament speech.

“There are things we can take from the Leeds game,” Röhl stated. “At times, we lacked the necessary bravery. I am aware that finding a balance between accomplishing something exceptional is crucial when playing against a strong opponent. After the Leeds game, I had a conversation with my team and we decided that being bold and aggressive in both ways was more important than achieving anything extraordinary. We need to be bold and take this to Ipswich.

“On the weekend, I hope to see a team that has the courage to step up and be brave in any circumstance. It’s important to note that Suffolk is currently enjoying success and that many of its games are decided in the closing moments. We are also getting ready for this.

“I believe I have a starting eleven in mind, and I believe these players could be the correct choices. Against Leeds, we had a strong first half; we were competitive and performed well. These are the crucial moments, and we were unlucky with the goal. In both compartments, we have to be brutal.”

“I am a manager who has clear idea of what I want,” he said. “Of course there are times in a game you have to defend in a different way and you have to be compact and protect your box. This is normal. But overall I am not a manager who will go there and look to park the bus, we have played against the strong sides and will always try to be on the front foot. We have to find the right balance and the right moments, when we go forwards and when we wait for the pressing trigger for example.

“We played a fantastic game against Leeds, but that is insufficient. Next, it’s about being prepared for the crucial times. They did, of course, have some decent opportunities, but this is to be expected since we took more chances. The atmosphere in the stadium was Sheffield Wednesday all through the first half. Playing well is not the point; we need to play well every time, and in the final 20 seconds, we lost it. It was unfortunate that we gave up two goals, but our response was more important.

“We have to be prepared for this match. We always have a chance in every game. It all comes down to our response, our level of bravery, and whether or not we perform effectively.
